This Mediterranean island nation took my breath away in so many ways with both its natural and man-made beauty. From the medieval towns to the bright crystal blue hues of the sea, it was an Instagram photographers paradise. To help you plan the most perfect trip there, let me share all of the best photo locations in Malta. Whether you’re a passionate photographer, you just want to “do it for the ‘gram” or you want to simply admire beautiful places sans camera click, this list will not disappoint.
In September 2020 I spent a week in Malta and was fortunate enough to experience a very quiet country due to ‘you-know-what‘. Travelling solo, I spent a lot of time researching where I wanted to visit and the best places to photograph. My creativity really came to life as I explored this country and I made sure to record everywhere I went so I could share all of the details with you.
Find an interactive map at the end of this article with each and every spot I visited. But first, here are my absolute favourite photo locations that you can’t miss!
Tigne Point Beach
Tigne Point has the best views across to the capital of Valletta and it’s an amazing spot to watch the sun go down as the city lights turn on. The term ‘beach’ should be used lightly. It’s more of a rocky bank with ladders leading into the sea but non-the-less it’s a beautiful spot for a swim.
Blue Lagoon
Of course, the most popular spot to visit in Malta is the Blue Lagoon and there is very good reason for that. There are so many beautiful spots to capture and I have labelled every single one in the map at the end.
Because of its popularity, you want to make sure you get here early. My best advice would be to get to the ferry port half an hour earlier than the first boat is scheduled to depart. The ferry port in Cirkewwa is quite far from the main area where most people stay when visiting Malta. It’s just over a 30 minute drive but to save money I was utilising public transport which took an hour.
Boats are scheduled to depart to Comino from 8:30am but the only bus that would get me to the port in time left St Julian at 7am. Thankfully, a boat ended up taking us at 8am with some staff that were getting a ride over to Comino.
We were some of the first people on the island and had a good half an hour before the first official boats even arrived. By 10am it was quite busy so I highly recommend walking around to all of the photo spots before this time and then relaxing for the rest of the day.
Crystal Lagoon
Crystal Lagoon is one of Malta’s best kept secrets. Head south on Comino Island past the Blue Lagoon and you’ll find a walking track that takes you up here above the sea caves below. Admiring the crystal blue lagoons from this height, you can see how they got their name.
The views only got better as you made your way up the top towards Saint Mary’s Tower. Spot the Blue Lagoon and you can even see all the way past that to the island of Gozo.
St. Peter’s Pool
St. Peter’s Pool is an amazing place to spend an afternoon, swimming and cliff jumping with the locals. Without a car you will need to walk out here from Marsaxlokk or organise a Taxi or Bonju (Malta’s answer to Uber).
Bridge Bar, Valletta
The capital city of Valletta was really quiet when I was there and this spot was one of my favourite places in the whole city to photograph. Make sure to explore the surrounding streets surrounded by the traditional sandstone buildings housing cute local cafes, bars etc.
Blue Grotto
Another iconic spot in Malta you have to see for yourself! Find the Blue Grotto viewpoints on the map below and don’t forget to take a boat ride to explore the grotto from the water. Don’t do what I did and arrive too late to catch the last boat of the day!
Popeye Village
An old Popeye movie set turned theme park sits in a remote corner of Malta. Pay an entrance fee to enjoy the theatrical streets, restaurants, water sports and games or find a spot across the water to admire it for free. In the mood for a dip? Find the boat ramp by the parking lot with these views across to the village.
Saint Agatha’s Tower
Saint Agatha’s Tower – or It-Torri L-Aħmar to the locals – was recently repainted in 2020 to this striking red colour. The fort is perched atop a hill in Mellieħa and can be easily spotted in surrounding areas. It was a really unique spot for some photos and the views across the island were beautiful.
Mdina
Make your way through the maze that is the walled and medieval city of Mdina. A must visit town in Malta with breathtaking buildings, alleys and the famous blue door.
Blue Hole
Gozo Island also holds some beautiful photo locations including the Blue Hole. Popular for divers, snorkelers and other water sports fans, it’s beauty from above wasn’t unnoticed. See directions and exactly how to get to this spot in the interactive map below.
Salt Pans of Xwejni
Natural salt pans can be found along the north coast of Gozo Island near Marsalforn. One local family and their ancestors have been working these salt pans since 1860! Patterns leftover on the ground from the pans look lik a work of art and are great for photos. Just remember to be respectful if they are actually being used (they were dried up in this area).
Wied il-Għasri
Lastly, venture to this salt water creek that cuts through the stone cliffs for a unique place to swim and spend an afternoon. The beach area was only small so I can imagine it becoming quite crowded in peak travel times.
Even more incredible locations can be found in the interactive map below. Each place that I personally visited I have marked with a purple pin and there will be my personal photo’s attached to that pin. Blue pins represent locations I had saved and wanted to visit but didn’t get to and may have generic photos from Google.
Have you been to Malta? Please share in the comments if you have any other incredible locations we should know about!
